How To Care For Your Custom Screen Printing

Ever Wonder How You Should Properly Care For Your Custom Printed Garments?

From time to time we get asked what is the best way to care for garments that have custom screen printing on them? Although we are nowhere near Susie Homemakers, we have gained tons of experience and some helpful knowledge on screen printed apparel after being in the business for the last 5 years. Besides properly washing your garments, the quality of the garment it’s self does play a significant role in the “wearability” over time, which is why we suggest to extend the life of your custom garments, you select from some of the best manufactures like Nike or Under Armour. By getting a quality garment to begin with, it will help prevent that feeling you get when you pull your new shirt out of the dryer only to find that it has shrunk down to a belly shirt.

Washing and drying your custom screen printing garments is actually an art form mastered with only a few steps. Following these steps will insure you get the most from your custom screen printing.

1.) Never use bleach or other strong detergents. Stain removers on spots can be helpful, but stay away from using bleach all together.

2.) Always use cold water. Hot water may be good for a hospital or hotel, but when it comes to your clothes, cold water is more gentle on fabrics and does just as well at cleaning.

3.) Always turn your custom screen printing garments inside-out before you throw them in the washer. This will help prevent fading, protect screen printing, and protect embellishments.

4.) NEVER, NEVER, NEVER put your clothes to dry on the machines highest setting. Heat is probably the worst thing you can do to any of your custom screen printing garments. Instead, use low heat and just before the garments are finished drying, pull them out to finish air drying.

5.) Wash similar garments together. Not just colors, but textures and fabrics. This is a great way to minimize cracking and peeling as it reduces the amount of rubbing caused in the washer.

Although this is technically a blog post about laundry, it does play an important factor in ensuring a long shelf life for your custom screen printing garments. Following these steps will help in preventing fading, cracking, peeling, and the production of what’s called pills ( that when too much rubbing is caused in the washer and the fabric creates little lumps of thread that appear like tiny pills).
